So, as much as I love to read and write, I am quite slow at finishing books in my day to day life (on holiday I normally don't put books down) only because I like to read all sorts on a day to day basis whether it's the news, fashion articles, blogs or whatever tickles my fancy really!
A couple of months ago on morning TV, I saw an interview with an English mother of two who had been inspired to write stories based on her love for the Twilight novels. I hadn't heard of the stories at the time however she was being interviewed due to the fact her books were quickly becoming bestsellers both here and over the pond. That was all I heard of them for a little while and then all of a sudden BOOM! All of my friends were suddenly reading her stories and sharing their thoughts of them over Facebook.
'Fifty Shades of Grey' by E. L. James is - for those who don't know - an erotic novel about the relationship between a man, the infamous Mr Christian Grey and college graduate, Anastasia Steele. Steele is required by Grey to sign a contract allowing him complete control over her life and upon learning she is a virgin, he agrees to sleep with her to prepare her for future encounters. It is notable for it's erotic content including references to BDSM. There are also two more volumes in the series entitled 'Fifty Shades Darker' and 'Fifty Shades Freed'.
Hot under the collar yet? Well it seems a lot of people are!! Even tthough it has received mixed reviews from my friends who have read the books and critics, the series has now sold 10 million copies worldwide and set the record in the UK as the fastest selling paper back of all time, surpassing the 'Harry Potter' novels.
Some have said it is amazing and that they haven't been able to put it down and others have said it isn't too bad but they can't see what the fuss is about....either way, I am quite intrigued! I guess by the time I have finished reading my latest book, all my friends will have finished their 'Fifty Shades' series and I will be able to borrow somebody's to make my own mind up (please).
What I love the most about all this hype surrounding the books, is how it is written simply by someone who was so inspired by another series of novels, she wanted to do the same and write a trilogy herself. She has a career background as a Television Executive and had written stories based on the Twilight series which then developed into 'Fifty Shades'. It's a great inspiration for anyone like me who is deciding to follow their dream of writing.
Just goes to show that you truly can do anything if you put your mind to it, work hard and just take the risk.
