My favourite Christmas songs.

This is a topic which can strike up a major debate; What truly is the best ever Christmas song in the history of the universe and time EVER?!?!?! Well, I must admit I don't have one particular favourite, I have a few in fact. I love Christmas songs so much that I even have Christmas songs I don't like so much on my iPod playlist just because they're Christmassy. I know, sad huh?

I always like to hear what peoples favourite Christmas songs are and why so thought I would share my faves with you and why I like them. I know some of my choices will not be to others taste but hey ho!

These are not in any particular order as I don't have an ultimate favourite, I am just writing this as and when the next song pops into my head!

1) Fairytale of New York - The Pogues Ft. Kirsty MacColl.

I don't know anyone who doesn't like this song! It is catchy, memorable and above all else festive and timeless. Despite the fact Shane MacGowan cannot sing for toffee he doesn't ruin this song one bit and I love Kirsty MacColl anyway, so a Christmas song with her on it was always going to be a winner in my books.

2) Christmas Time (Don't let the bells end) - The Darkness

I loved The Darkness at the height of their fame, I still love them now too! Glam rock took a giant leap into the 21st Century thanks to these guys and they made it fun again. Their festive jingle very nearly made it to number one in Christmas 2003 but was beaten at the last minute by 'Mad World' by Michael Andrews and Gary Jules (who?!) the song was from the soundtrack of the film 'Donnie Darko' and The Darkness were robbed in my eyes. I love this festive song and it isn't played enough on the radio!

3) Do They Know It's Christmas? - Band Aid

Such an iconic song and written for a good cause. Every year it is played again and again and raises awareness of  the poverty that blightens some peoples lives at a time when we are all spending money like it's burning holes in our pockets. Not only that, all the royalties for it being played again and again still go to charity too therefore raising more money every year - how great is that?! Charity element aside, it features some of the 80's biggest music artists and it is still a classic.

4) Thank God It's Christmas - Queen

Not a greatly well known song I don't think? I love Queen and even though this isn't the best song they released by a long chalk it reminds me of being a kid at Christmas so just that element alone makes me love it. I do think it is quite catchy too though!

5) I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday - Wizzard

Classic 70's rock Christmas anthem which has not grown old no matter how many years have passed. I love the lyrics, I love the music and love the finale with the choir singing us out of the song to the sound of Christmas chimes. Magical! I also love watching the glam rock 70's music video. Sparkly make up and flares a plenty!

6) Merry Christmas - Slade

Another great Christmas song that has stood the test of time. From the brilliant lyrics (''What will your Daddy do when he sees your mama kissing Santa Claus?') to Noddy's infamous 'It's Chriiiiiiiiiistmassss!!!'  they really don't make Christmas songs like they used to, such a shame!

7) Last Christmas - Wham!

I love this song so much! It truly reminds me of being little every time I hear it. When I was about 6 this song was about the same age and now - like me - it is nearly 30! It is a classic cheesy 80's ballad but that's why I love it. The music video is the ultimate Christmas card scene too.

8) Step Into Christmas - Elton John

Can't forget good old Elton! Another classic that's fun and festive and reminds me of being a youngan waiting anxiously for Father Christmas to arrive. My mum had a 'Now That's What I Call Christmas' LP which was played Christmas morning and pretty much all of the above (less 'The Darkness') featured on there - hence my love of them!

9) Stop The Calvery - Jonah Lewie

Not quite sure what I love about this one - aside from AGAIN it being on my Mum's Christmas LP. I just think it is fun and festive and distinctive. It makes you want to jig! ha-ha.

10) In Dulci Jubilo - Mike Oldfield

Another classic from Mum's LP! This to me sounds like Christmas though don't you think? It is the perfect song to play on Christmas morning when you are getting ready to open your pressies and enjoying a hot chocolate.
