January Goals (NOT Resolutions!)

Nicki Kinickie, 2019, January Goals, New Years Resolutions, Mental Health Blogger, mhbloggers, life goals,

Is it too late to talk about resolutions? Or 2019 goals? I don't know the official cut off date for all of this so sod it I will talk about them anyway.

I have no problem with New Years resolutions and have made many of them myself over the years however, I have learned from previous experience that it is probably best to make more short term 'goals' as apposed to long term 'resolutions'.

I have also learned less is more when it comes to resolutions too. If you want more tips you can read my HuffPost blog post from last January here.

Ok so I do kinda have two main goals for this year which could technically be classed as resolutions; the first is to lose weight (I ate my way through 2018) and second is to focus on my writing work (other things took precedent last year and despite a good year that saw me appear on 'Good Morning Britain' amongst other things, I didn't put 100% in like I intended to).

However, rather than talk about New Years resolutions I thought I would talk instead about my goals for January which, let's face it, can be a pretty shitty month. Dark, cold and long it is understandable we lose track of our long term resolutions.

So instead, here are my short term goals for January to get me through.

DEEP CLEAN

The house is long overdue a good old clean up and sort out, I don't know about you but my house gets neglected in December because it's harder to clean with all the decorations and tree in the way plus you're much more social than normal with Christmas activities and social gatherings.

You are also taken up with shopping for the big day itself.

Now Christmas is over and Savannah is back at school I can declutter a bit more, clean EVERYWHERE (oven, inside cupboards etc) and get prepared for when Spring arrives.

EATING WELL

As I said previously I ate my way through 2018 and while I am not happy with the weight I have gained I am not letting it rule my life. I am still happy with my body and will wear what I want in the meantime but I do need to sort myself out. Mainly for health reasons more than anything.

For the first time in my life I am wanting to eat well to feel and look healthier rather than be skinny. When I think of being healthy I think of living longer and being around longer for Savannah. Weight doesn't determine health.

EXERCISE

I hate the gym so am not one of those people who signs up every January. There is no point. Anyone looking to get fit should find an exercise you enjoy doing because that way you will keep it up. For me, I enjoy toning exercises, yoga and walking.

Toning and yoga can be done for free via YouTube at home and when I am in the habit I do it when watching TV of an evening too rather than sitting on my arse. Walking is great for the mind too. All exercise is of course but I find walking really relaxing and it makes my mind happy and keeps my anxiety at bay.

MAKING PLANS

Making plans makes me happy. Knowing I have fun and exciting things to look forward to over the coming months and year makes me smile on weeks where I have no plans and it is dark and lashing it down outside.

There is so much I want to do in 2019 and one way or another I plan on doing most of them. I already have another tattoo booked but also want to do some new stuff this year including a writing course.

RELAX

January can be depressing but it is also a great opportunity to relax and unwind. Whether it's family nights in watching a film or a nice long bubble bath or face mask followed by an early night are amazing for the soul and cost nothing, or at the most pennies.

Whenever I find myself without any plans I definitely intend on having some pamper time.

I think these January goals are doable. Don't you?
Do you make resolutions? Or do you think they're a waste of time? I would love to know.
