Keith Flint; Proof You Should Never Judge a Book By Its Cover.

Keith Flint, The Prodigy, Male Suicide, Kindness costs nothing, don't judge by appearances,

Last week the music world was rocked by the announcement of Keith Flints death at just 49 years old. It was later confirmed that The Prodigy frontman had taken his own life.
One thing that has become apparent in the aftermath of his untimely passing is just how kind he was and it got me thinking...

As the news of Flints tragic death spread, stories were being shared by either fans, those who had met him in passing or those who knew him well. All of the stories were extremely touching and revealed just how humble, kind and genuine the musician was despite his successful career and fame.

It appears he always had time for people no matter who they were and treated everyone he met with respect and warmth.

Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl hailed Flint a 'true icon' and Chemical Brothers Ed Simons described him as a 'great man' while BBC Radio 2's Jo Whiley tweeted: ''Oh this is sad news. The death of Keith Flint. Whenever our paths crossed he was an absolute sweetheart.'' but there was one particular tweet that generated headlines and it was from musician James Blunt.

Now, for those of you who don't know,  James Blunt is a bit of a Twitter legend. His banter is top notch. But this particular tweet about Flint resonated with many as it reminded us all that when it comes down to it, it doesn't matter who you are whether you're a musician, on television or work in an office in Bristol; respect and manners cost nothing.

Blunt wrote over two tweets: ''At the Q Awards years ago, when @NoelGallagher said he was leaving Ibiza because I'd moved there, and @DamonAlbarn refused to be in the same picture as me, and @PaulWellerHQ was saying he'd rather eat his own shit than work with me, Keith Flint came over, gave me a hug, and said how thrilled he was for my success.

Keith, I only met you once but I shed a tear at the news of your death. In our business there are no prizes for being kind, but if there was, that Grammy would be yours.''

Keith Flint's stage persona was bold and crazy; with his wild eye make up, piercings and colourful hair. Some even described his appearance as 'nut case' in their tributes. I can actually remember first seeing the video to 'Firestarter' in the 90's and being scared by him! (Let me off, I was about 11) His was a look that would typically have disgusted many and there would no doubt have been those who judged his attitude, intelligence and personality solely on his appearance.

But as the tributes go to show, those snap judgements could not have been further from the truth and his personal persona was very different from what he displayed in public. As well as raising awareness for mental health and male suicide, I think what we must also learn from Flint's passing is not to judge others we don't know.

Just because someone likes to dress in an extreme or an alternative or flamboyant way it doesn't mean you have their card marked. Judge someone on how they treat you, not on your own stereotypical views. Be more like Keith Flint; who saw the good in everyone he met and had time for them too.

Thankfully times are changing and now more than ever, people are free to be who they are, dress as they want without fear of judgement.

But we still have a long way to go.

RIP Keith Flint. 1969-2019
